The NFL is replacing a quarter of its teams' head coaches in 2024. That's another ma sive turnover on the sidelines and every one Joe Donovan Jersey of those teams is hoping it made the right hire for near-future and long-term succe s. But given how busy this cycle was and how fickle league owners can be, there's a good chance some of the new coaches just won't work out. This year's just hired cla s is no different. Here's ranking the NFL's latest eight new full-time coaches, from the Chargers hitting a home run to the Patriots and Titans underwhelming after letting strong leaders go: NFL DRAFT 2024: | Ranking the NFL's new head coaches for 2024 1. Jim Harbaugh, Chargers (age: 60) Two Harbaughs in the NFL are better than one. No surprise, Jim in his second pro stint, is taking from his national champion Michigan staff for defense and landed his GM from the front office of brother John's Ravens. After crushing it with the 49ers and making the smooth transition to win it all with his alma mater, the former scrappy starting QB is bound to make it work well inheriting Justin Herbert. There's some work to be done to getting Herbert's supporting personnel resettled and improvements to be made on the defense. A great start is bringing the Baltimore and Ann Arbor blueprints to Los Angeles. Chasing the Chiefs, Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes is a challenge, but remember Harbaugh was up to the task battling Seattle while with San Francisco. The Chargers' history of underachieving with good talent is about to change in not too long. 2. Mike Macdonald, Seahawks (age: 36) The Seahawks go from having the NFL's oldest coach in Pete Carroll (72) to someone half his age as the league's new youngest coach. They stay defensive-minded in going for a rising young schemer, who has delivered for two Harbaughs on two levels. Macdonald also has promise as a motivator who can consistently get the best out C.J. Baird Jersey of his players. He made the most of his Ravens' defense to make it the league's best pa s-rushing group with versatile alignments and can restore that strength for the Seahawks, too. Dave Canales, Panthers (age: 42) Consider Canales, who worked with the Seahawks two years ago before going to the Buccaneers, the offensive version of MacDonald from the past few seasons. Canales crushed helping Shane Waldron (now with the Bears) getting career-revival efficient production from Geno Smith in Seattle. As the play-caller, he followed much of the same game plan in "whispering" Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay. The Panthers' priority in moving from Frank Reich and Thomas Brown was getting the right QB-coaching fit for Bryce Young. From that perspective, the Panthers should be happen they went more forward-thinking, diverse and innovative with Canales, the true 180 they needed from the archaic Matt Rhule disaster. 4. Raheem Morris, Falcons (age: 47) Morris has been a head coach in the NFL before, in the NFC South no le s. Morris was hired as a much younger leader 15 years ago by the Buccaneers. He could never put together the team as well as he wanted defensively and didn't have a reliable QB. Morris also was inexperienced then in getting a promotion and had the unenviable task of following Jon Taylor Lewan Jersey Gruden, still not too far removed from leading the team to Super Bowl victory. Morris deserved a second chance with his updated savvy, also getting a boost from being the Super Bowl-winning defensive coordinator for Sean McVay. There's appeal for him to get much more out of the Falcons' fine pieces on that side of the ball. Morris was smart to tap into McVay's staff for his offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, who will be ready to maximize the first-round talents of Bijan Robinson, Drake London and Kyle Pitts. Antonio Pierce, Raiders (age: 45) Pierce was rewarded for leading Las Vegas to a 5-4 record in the second half of the season once Josh McDaniels was relieved of his duties short of two full seasons. The players immediately loved the former one-time Giants Pro Bowl and Super Bowl champion linebacker as he kept revving up Maxx Crosby and the defense. Pierce's likable juice after an immediate win spilled over to getting trust from the offense, to the point Davante Adams was lobbying for his full-time promotion late. The Raiders' officials listed to their players and stayed with a most functional hire, confident they could find a few more mi sing pierces, starting with a franchise QB, whether a high draft pick, Justin Fields or even Ru sell Wilson. Las Vegas now has the culture to cultivate a winning team. Pierce also will work well with new GM Tom Telesco, fresh off several good years with the rival Chargers. 6. Brian Callahan, Titans (age: 39) Callahan joins Kyle Shanahan (Mike) and Wade Phillips (Bum) as a second-generation NFL head coach. Brian's father Bill, an offensive line guru, once led the Raiders to the Super Bowl, after Gruden, vs. Gruden's Buccaneers. Brian has developed his own budding offensive career helping Zac Taylor in producing an elite pa sing offense with Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase. He was a big reason for Cincinnati's quick Super Bowl run with Burrow. The Titans are hoping Callahan can have the same effect on the skill set and mind-set De'Veon Smith Jersey of Will Levis. Mike Vrabel lost a power struggle to remain the coach, but he was rather succe sful in relation to his roster. The Titans also have proved to be impatient and fickle, so if Levis doesn't pan out, the hammer could fall on Callahan faster than expected. (Getty Images) 7. Jerod Mayo, Patriots (age: 37) Mayo will forever be the answer on who replaced a fired Bill Belichick in New England. Robert Kraft promoted the former Patriots star linebacker from within, perhaps inspired by Dan Campbell's effect on the Lions and the Raiders moving from trying the "Patriot Way" to Pierce. Mayo has been a rising candidate for a while under Belichick, but he still needs a GM and is facing a major overhaul as he tries to fill the big hoodie of his former coach. Let's hope Mayo isn't a bridge option for Kraft, but the situation doesn't seem set up well for enough follow-up succe s with a similar mind-set as Belichick. 8. Dan Quinn, Commanders (age: 53) Quinn, who took the Falcons to Super Bowl 51 as their head coach, joins Morris as a former NFC South leader getting a second chance to move up from Jordan Nwogu Jersey defensive coordinator. Unfortunately, Washington wasn't just the last team to hire, but it ended up with the least inspiring hire based on its current situation. The Commanders just tried this with Ron Rivera, another defensive-minded former NFC South coach who took the Panthers to Super Bowl 50. Although the Commanders are needing to rebuild their defense, especially in the pa s rush, and have some free-agent i sues with the best players in a shaky secondary. That's the obvious appeal of getting Quinn away from the archrival Cowboys, given that team has a high-impact pa s-rushing and coverage defense. The major concern for the Commanders is getting the right quarterback, so going for a similar coach to Rivera vs. a young rising offensive mind is questionable. There's also been a lot of buzz in Washington about the new owner and GM, and Quinn's hire brings down that level of hype. The Commanders had a chance to hit another home run, but they settled for a single up the middle.
